The exchange semester at The University of Tokyo have come to an end. Me and my friends decided to climb the most famous mountain in Japan, Mountain Fuji.

Mountain Fuji only opens to the public from July to September.  There are four trails that we can choose from, we chose the most famous one called Fuji Yoshida. It takes roughly seven and a half hours up to the top of the mountain(3776m) from the fifth station(2305m) and another four and a half back down not including the resting time.

Since we wanted to see the sunrise at the top of the mountain, we started to climb around seven at night. It was easy and straight forward before the seventh station. Towards the eighth station, the trail become a lot steeper, sometimes we even need to use our hands to climb up the rocks.(So a pair of gloves is necessary) Our climbing speed was a lot faster than we expected, so we decided to take a break at the eighth station. Each of us bought a cup of black coffee while we were resting to warm us up, the temperature there was really low, especially since it was at night. After a good long rest we continued to climb towards the ninth station. As the track become more crowded, we got a chance to stop and glanced the beautiful sky while waiting for people to move forward. The sky was so clear that we were able to see a lot of stars and some meteors. That was a view we will never be able to see if we are not on a mountain at night. Finally, after following the crowds for about an hour, we reached the top of the mountain. We waited for about one and a half hour for the sunrise, unfortunately the fog was too thick, we only saw the sky getting brighter without seeing the sun. But fortunately all of us got a stamp on our mini wooden Trekking pole. The stamp is in Kanji–‘富士山頂’, it means ‘top of mountain fuji’. We started heading back to the fifth station after getting the stamps. Without sleeping for a day, the way down felt a lot harder than the way up. But even though it was hard, we still made it to the fifth station.

Mountain Fuji is the first Mountain that I climbed overnight. It is a great memory with friends and another unforgettable memory that I have during the exchange semester in Japan.
