Hong Kong is a fascinating enigma, a vibrant city with a complex duality; feng shui and finance, trams and temples, concrete high rises and lush mountains, Chinese roots and colonial connections. During my stay, I’ve sampled some amazing Cantonese cuisine, some of the best food I’ve ever tasted, ranging from freshly steamed dim sum to warm pineapple buns wedged with butter. I’ve been dazzled by the stunning harbour and energised by a combination of the urban, the rural and the maritime. It has been a scintillating joy to explore every corner of its vibrant streets. Here glimpses of old-world tranquillity, incense filled Taoist temples and rustic remote walking trails, intermingle with countless shopping malls and swanky glassed-in restaurants and chic cocktail bars.
Hong Kong is truly an higher educational powerhouse. Studying at HKU has been a challenging and insightful experience. I have had the opportunity to delve into a range of modules taught by leaders in their respective fields, with contentious topics ranging from Human Rights in China to the increasing Globalisation of International Economic law. The university’s ‘buddy programme’ was vital in helping me settle down in the new environment and integrate with the local community whereas the day-long orientation at the start of the semester offered amazing cultural adjustment sessions, library tours, city tours and outings.
Whether it’s karaoke, hiking, or just hours spent at a hot-pot restaurant with friends, you are sure to be whisked away to some mystery adventure at any hour of the day or night by a hospitable university mate.
If you’re looking to get a taste of the East, without completely abandoning home comforts, then Hong Kong could just be the study abroad destination for you!
