Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine, and in July 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to make that dream a reality by spending a semester at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. From the moment I arrived, I knew this experience would be life-changing in more ways than one.
Academic Insights
As a student of politics and international relations, I was thrilled to be in New Zealand during a general election. Witnessing the electoral process in another country firsthand was both fascinating and educational. I gained a deeper understanding of different political systems and voter behavior, which directly complemented my studies. It was an extraordinary opportunity to see the theories and concepts I had learned in the classroom come to life.
Exploring Wellington
Wellington quickly became one of my favorite cities in the world. The campus itself was breathtaking, located right next to the botanical gardens. This meant I could enjoy serene walks amidst nature between classes. The city’s layout made it easy to access some of the most stunning hiking routes in the world. Whether it was a quick hike up Mount Victoria or a weekend trek through the Tararua Range, the natural beauty of New Zealand never ceased to amaze me.
Adventures on the North Island
One of the highlights of my time abroad was a road trip around the North Island. I explored all the major cities, each with its unique charm and attractions. I experienced thrilling adventures like abseiling and climbing up waterfalls in the caves of Waitomo, where I also witnessed the mesmerizing glow worms – a sight that felt almost otherworldly. These activities pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to appreciate the rugged, adventurous spirit of New Zealand.
Lifelong Friendships
Beyond the academic and adventurous aspects, the people I met made my experience truly special. I formed friendships that I know will last a lifetime. My fellow students and I bonded over our shared experiences, from late-night study sessions to exploring new places together. The sense of community and camaraderie at Victoria University of Wellington was palpable, making it feel like a second home.
Final Thoughts
Reflecting on my time in New Zealand, I can confidently say that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The combination of academic growth, personal adventures, and meaningful relationships created an experience that was enriching on every level. For anyone considering a study abroad program, I could not recommend Victoria University of Wellington more highly. It’s a place where learning extends beyond the classroom, and every day is an opportunity for a new adventure.
