If there’s one thing that the British believe about Americans its that they love their food. And it’s true, they do. From oversized portions in The Cheesecake Factory to all you can eat pancakes with bottomless syrup in IHOP(which I ashamedly admit, I’ve eaten at both places), Boston, the city where I currently live on my year abroad, sure serves up the American classics.
I enjoy traveling and one of the reasons I travel is for food. Therefore I was excited to see what Boston had to offer and be able to live in a large city for the first time in my life; there would be so many more options. The Boston classics include the Boston Cream Pie, Cannoli, Lobster Roll, Clam Chowder and a Fenway Frank; a hot dog at the iconic Fenway Park, where the Red Sox play. The Clam Chowder is a definite favorite out of those.
An old friend that I had missed since my time in NYC in 2014 was Shake Shack. Whilst it is available in London, it just isn’t quite the same so I was looking forward to grabbing a burger with that Shake Shack sauce, and what’s more American than a burger? Luckily it’s in Harvard Square, a 10 minute walk from my research institute.
The mix of their unique sauce, potato bun and the smash burger, a thin crispy patty made from high fat beef, provides what I believe to be the ultimate burger.
But without a doubt the best fast-casual restaurant in Boston is only a 10 minute walk from my house, in Somerville. Called DakZen, which is Thai for ‘Eat Noodle’, it unsurprisingly sells Thai Street Noodles, but at a quality level that is unparalleled. If you’re ever in Boston, definitely make the trip to try this place.
And for dessert? Brooklyn-based Momofuku Milk Bar have recently opened up shop in Harvard Square, where I work so these sweet treats are becoming a treat a little bit too often.
