First impressions are crucial I’ve been told, but I’m definitely not a first impressions girl. If I judged things on first impressions I would find it difficult to do anything. I usually like to warm up to things to finally reach an area of comfort. That being said, my first impressions of this city is that it is just amazing, imagine Canary Wharf on crack that’s the best way I can put it.
It’s big and busy right, and I haven’t even ventured to the busiest areas yet (you know the whole warming up thing). I’m living in university accommodation that is mostly filled with local and mainland Chinese / Cantonese students. There are a few sprinkles of international students, I being one. Most people have double rooms, meaning they have a room mate, luckily I have a single. A double is fine of course but I just thought it might have been awkward if I ever wanted to cry myself to sleep or exhibit any sort of emotion.
I’ve been a bit shocked though, at the massive similarities between HK and the UK, I’ve seen Pret, M&S, The Diner and many western chains. All the shops exist here. I haven’t come across my beloved Celine rip off Zara, but I’ve seen many people with their bags, so hopefully, soon we will soon cross paths. I now understand why it is so easy for Brits to live here, bar the intense humidity.
The adjustment is a process one that I’m still coming to terms with, but you just have to throw yourself into these types of thing. As I get used to living and studying here I’ll be updating and showing you guys just what I get up to. If there’s anything you want to see just drop me a message on any of my social media listed on here!
