My name is Jack, and as part of my MPhys programme, I was selected to carry out a research year at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in Boston, Massachusetts.

The primary aim for my year abroad was to experience a different culture. For my project, I looked into how black holes interact with stars, specifically the type of light given off when they interact. During semester 1, I was presented with many challenges. My project involved the use of Linux and various other softwares that took a bit of getting used to. I was also able to explore the East Coast of the US, including New York City and Salem (a town in Massachusetts known for witches).Â

In semester 2, I was presented with an opportunity to attend and present at the American Astronomical Society conference in Phoenix, Arizona. This provided me with a unique opportunity to develop my ability to communicate effectively and clearly. After the conference, my time in the US was cut short due to medical reasons. During this time, the study abroad team was very supportive of my need to return to the UK and provided clear guidelines on how I could do this without impacting my degree. Despite this, having a year abroad was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to explore a new country and experience a new culture.Â
