When I first learned about the study abroad program at the University of Southampton, I had no idea it would lead me to the other side of the globe. I was in my second year studying economics and craving a new experience, something that would challenge me and take me out of my comfort zone. Before I knew it, I was packing for a semester at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable chapters of my life.
A Warm Welcome Down Under
The UNSW Kensington campus immediately impressed me with its modern architecture, green spaces, and vibrant student life. Orientation week was packed with welcome events, club expos, and casual hangouts that made it easy to meet other exchange and international students. The campus felt alive, and the energy was infectious.

Studying Economics in a Global Context
UNSW offered a refreshing academic experience. One of my favourite modules was Modern Labour Markets, which allowed me to explore employment and wage dynamics from an Australian perspective while drawing comparisons with the UK. The classes were interactive, the content was thought-provoking, and the lecturers were always approachable and encouraging.
Campus Life and New Friendships
Outside of lectures, I threw myself into campus life, with something always going on to be able to meet people from all over the world—many of whom I now consider close friends.
I also joined a martial arts gym in Sydney, which helped me stay active and immerse myself in the local combat sports culture. But one of the most memorable social experiences? The boat parties. Sailing through Sydney Harbour with music, friends, and city lights in the background—it honestly felt like a movie.

Beaches, Music, Rugby & Even Royalty
Weekends were for adventure. Sydney has an incredible mix of beaches, nightlife, natural beauty, and cultural events. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk quickly became a favourite, with stunning views and beach stops along the way.
Two major highlights were seeing the Weeknd live at Accor Stadium and attending an Australia vs New Zealand rugby match at Sydney Olympic Park, my first live rugby experience, and an intense one at that! Oh, and also meeting King Charles at the Sydney Opera House was cool!
Final Thoughts
Studying abroad at UNSW taught me more than any textbook ever could. I came home more independent, open-minded, and excited about my future. I’ve already convinced a friend to apply, and I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.
If you’re thinking about going on exchange—even for a moment—go. Step into the unknown. You’ll return with lifelong memories, friends from across the globe, and a whole new perspective on the world and yourself.
