Hi everyone, I’m Plato, a third-year student studying civil engineering at the University of Southampton. I went on exchange to the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) in the academic year 2024-25, and would love to share some insights about it!!

Why Studying Abroad at the University of Tokyo was one of the best decisions I ever made

If you’re even thinking about studying abroad–do it. Seriously. My time as an exchange student at UTokyo was unforgettable, full of surprises, challenges, and moments of growth. Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I went–and why I think Japan, and UTokyo in particular, is such a fantastic choice.

Language: Start Small, It Pays Off Big

I arrived in Tokyo with minimal Japanese–no proper classes, no Duolingo streak, just barely able to read the language. It was quite overwhelming. But once I started taking beginner Japanese lessons at UTokyo, things started to shift. Slowly, I could read signs, order good, and actually have conversations. And with that, everything became more fun–joining clubs, meeting people, even just exploring the city. So here’s my advice: even just learning the basics before you go makes a huge difference. It opens doors and makes your time so much more rewarding.

Culture: Different? Yes. Beautiful? Absolutely.

Coming from the UK, I had a bit of a culture shock at first. Japan is big on respect, especially toward senior students and professors. There’s even a whole language style–keigo–for formal situations. At first, it felt strange, but over time, I came to really appreciate how these customs reflect the values of Japanese society. Being open to local ways of doing things helped me feel more connected, more included, and more immersed in the culture.

Research Your Host Uni–It’s Worth It

Before applying, take the time to really explore your host university. Check course offerings, module compatibility, rankings, and student reviews. If you’re hoping to transfer credits, this step is essential. Don’t just go with a famous name–find the right academic fit.

Why Japan (and Asia) Should Be On Your List

Tokyo is a dream for students–affordable, exciting, and full of exuberance. From the vibrant nightlife and traditional festivals to quiet shrines and quirky cafes, there’s always something happening around you. At the University, student festivals and societies are incredibly active and welcoming–there won’t even be a boring second. And when it comes to budgeting, Japan is way more student-friendly than people think. Rent, food, public transport? All surprisingly manageable. Bonus: Tokyo’s trains are always on time and rarely late; its metro system is top-notch in terms of efficiency in the world!

Cross-Faculty Courses = New Perspectives

One thing I loved about UTokyo was their college-wide courses. You could join classes in English on global issues or niche topics, often working with students from completely different majors. It was a chance to get out of my academic bubble, collaborate across cultures, and pick up knowledge I wouldn’t normally encounter in my degree program.

TL;DR: Go For It

Still undecided? I say go for a full year abroad if you can (a semester goes by in a flash). Don’t worry too much about funding–exchange programs often come with tuition support and scholarships. What matters is that you take the leap. You’ll grow in ways you can’t imagine, and the memories will stay with you long after you’re back home.

Thinking of studying abroad in Japan? Start with some basic language practice, dig into your research, and be open to new experiences. The rest will follow–and it’ll be amazing.
