My name is Eden and I recently spent the first semester of my third year studying Psychology at the University of Adelaide, Australia – it was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my degree. While moving to the other side of the world on my own was initially incredibly daunting, it quickly became an experience that shaped me both academically and personally in many ways.

Everyday Life in Adelaide
One of the things I loved most about Adelaide (aside from the warm weather!) was how easy it was to settle into everyday life. As a smaller city, it was easy to feel a part of the community and learn my way around. This allowed me to quickly find a routine that balanced studying, socialising, and making the most of the beautiful city. Adelaide’s location made it easy to explore beyond campus, surrounded by stunning beaches and wine regions, and nearby to Kangaroo Island. I also embraced much of the everyday relaxed Australian life, from AFL games and trying new foods, to long beach days and seeing Australia’s unique wildlife.

Studying Psychology Abroad
Alongside enjoying the Australian culture, I thoroughly enjoyed my studies whilst in Adelaide. There was a strong focus on applying theory to real-world contexts, which complemented my studies at home and gave me a fresh perspective on the subject. I found the Australian approach to university to be somewhat more laid back than in Southampton, with a larger focus on interactive tutorials and workshops rather than lectures. This gave me the opportunity to meet lots of people from my course and collaborate with them on numerous group projects. I also valued learning about Aboriginal culture and perspectives, which enriched my cultural understanding and added depth to my studies.

Travelling and Social Life!
Outside of university, I made the most of every opportunity to travel and explore. During my time in Australia, I visited many of the major cities, travelled to Tasmania, and explored the East Coast where I snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef! I loved every minute of it and had the most unforgettable experience from start to finish.

One of the highlights of my semester was meeting people from all over the world. I learned so much about different cultures, shared my own experiences, and formed many lifelong friendships. Prior to my trip, I was nervous that it may be difficult to build close friendships like those I had at home, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! With many others in my accommodation also on a semester abroad and in a similar position, I quickly became close with those around me. It was nice to have people to explore with, and who could relate to feelings of homesickness or anxiety about new experiences! These friendships greatly enhanced my cultural awareness, communication skills, and confidence.

Some Advice!
My semester abroad was without question one of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences of my life. I am incredibly grateful for my time in Adelaide, and I would strongly encourage any students considering studying abroad to take the opportunity if they can. My biggest advice is to fully embrace the experience – say yes to new opportunities, get involved, and step outside your comfort zone. Studying abroad is an experience that will stay with you long after it ends.
